— A History of The American Indian Boarding Schools — 2418 E 9th St N, Wichita, KS 67214
Join us for a presentation and discussion of “A History of The American Indian Boarding Schools” led by Eric Anderson. The program is made possible by Humanities Kansas.
Renewed calls for investigations into the abuses to American Indian children have brought new scrutiny to the boarding school system. This talk will examine the thinking behind the creation of federal schools for youth including Haskell Indian Nations University, originally known as the United States Indian Industrial Training School, and how this system affected Native communities in the short and long term. The American Indian story is one of cultural survival, but what are the next steps for reckoning with this difficult and painful part of our national history?
Eric Anderson is professor of history at Haskell Indian Nations University and a member of the Potawatomi Nation.
“A History of The American Indian Boarding Schools” is part of Humanities Kansas's Speakers Bureau, featuring humanities-based presentations designed to share stories that inspire, spark conversations that inform, and generate insights that strengthen civic engagement.

Wichita Oasis is a non-religious community for people to come together to connect, be inspired, and feel empowered. We meet weekly on Sunday mornings and programming may include featured speakers, live local musicians, potlucks, service projects, game days, and more. The program starts at 11:00 AM, and people are encouraged to come half an hour earlier for coffee, snacks, and conversation.
Kid's Room. Two experienced and background-checked adults are ready to help make your child's experience at Wichita Oasis as fun and engaging as the main program.
Extension Room. For older kids and adults who don't require supervision but are not interested in the main program, the Extension Room offers a separate space to connect, play, create, and explore. Two background-checked adults will be there hanging out, so you'll never be alone. Feel free to bring a game, craft, book, or other activity to enjoy by yourself or with others.
