The common understanding is that there is a “perfect” English language as defined by our English teachers that most mere mortals are never quite able to use. There is almost a religious sense that we are sinners when we misuse “whom” or say “ain’t.” In point of fact what we consider that perfect English is what the people in power in our society speak or have spoken in the past. In his talk Sam will explore versions of English that correlate to the speaker’s geographical area, social status, financial standing, educational level, ethnic background and even in given social setting and how the notion of a Standard English is used to judge and control segments of our fellow citizens.
Wichita Oasis is a secular community that meets weekly on Sunday mornings to enjoy fascinating talks, live music, and conversation. The program starts at 11:00 AM, and people are encouraged to come half an hour earlier for coffee, snacks, and conversation. If it's your first time visiting, make sure to stop by our welcome table in the back of the room to say hello and learn more about Oasis. Parents can drop off their young ones with our team in the kids room, where they will meet new friends and enjoy fun activities together.
